The 2025 Magis and 2025 AMDG Awards were recently presented to Ray Zammit ’69 and Pete ’81 and Jan Ruma upon the recommendation of school leadership and by approval by the Board of Directors.
Zammit, recipient of the Magis Award which recognizes generosity of spirit both professionally and persionally, is a member of the inaugural class of 1969. Zammit was a superb scholar and wrestler for SJJ. He continued his Jesuit education at John Carroll University and earned his masters in business at the University of Toledo. Using his business acumen and relationships Zammit developed the leading laundry and linen service in Northwest Ohio and nurtured at his second home, Stone Oak Country Club. For decades Zammit gave back to his sport of wrestling by serving as a decorated official. Zammit is ever-present at St. John’s Jesuit, supporting his alma mater as a Titan fan and through tuition assistance. The scholarship he established in honor of his father and mother has ensured others can attain what he has: a Titan diploma and legacy that is still a guiding force in his life.
Pete ’81 and Jan Ruma are this year’s recipients of the AMDG Award which recognizes lives lived for the greater glory of God. The letters “AMDG” appear boldly on school apparel, the Heinschel Basketball Court, on the main entrance of campus, and are certainly in the hearts of the Rumas. A graduate of the SJJ class of 1981, Ruma matriculated at Bowling Green State University and prepared for a successful financial advising career at Gould Ruma. Jan’s work as a health care advocate at Pathways has been impactful as she coordinated many varieties of care for the marginalized, from underweight babies to coordination of emergency and disaster preparedness. She also served the Hospital Council of NW Ohio, using her talents to begin the first Pathways Community. The Rumas’ most generous hearts led them to sponsor students here for several years, for him to serve on the Board and SJJ Foundation and share his financial expertise to enhance the SJJ mission, and to establish the Ruma Family Scholarship Endowment that has helped many students of modest means earn a St. John’s Jesuit diploma.
