Gonzaga Scholars
Program at St. John’s Jesuit
An individualized Jesuit education for young men with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Gonzaga Scholars Program offers young men with intellectual and developmental disabilities accessibility to the full experience of a St. John’s Jesuit education. The inaugural recruiting season is underway and the first program participants will be enrolled for the 2027-2028 school year!
Inspired by St. Ignatius
More than five hundred years ago St. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus and its core ministry of education in the spirit of inclusion. He emphasized the importance of inclusion as a fundamental aspect of community and service and believed that engaging with diverse individuals and fostering an inclusive environment were essential for spiritual growth and social justice. It is through this lens of justice and equity that the Gonzaga Scholars Program was created.
Named for St. Aloysius Gonzaga, SJ
The Gonzaga Scholars Program takes its name from St. Aloysius Gonzaga, the Jesuit patron saint of youth and students. Although he lived a short life, he was known for teaching and walking alongside young people with a focus on accompaniment and compassion. The Gonzaga Scholars Program name reflects exactly what this program hopes to be: an example of walking alongside every student, whatever they are facing.
A PROGRAM FOR EVERY TITAN.
Ignatius encouraged collaboration and working with others, emphasizing that ministry should be a collective effort. He demonstrated that serving others, regardless of their background, is a core aspect of living a meaningful life. Led by his example and ultimately by Jesus Christ, the true Man for Others, the Gonzaga Scholars Program will surely impact the entire student body, by bringing to life what it means to be committed to justice, equity, belonging, and advocating for marginalized voices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this program for?
Young men with intellectual and developmental disabilities seeking a Jesuit high school education with an individualized path suited to their needs.
How will this affect current students and programs?
The Gonzaga Scholars Program is designed to strengthen the student experience, not replace or reduce existing programs. St. John’s long-standing history of success, traditional admissions criteria and graduation requirements, and college-preparatory environment remain unchanged, just as they have been for more than 9,000 St. John’s alumni. At the same time, students will have new opportunities to grow in leadership, empathy, service, and friendship through meaningful interaction with Gonzaga Scholars. Research overwhelmingly shows inclusive programs, like this one, benefit the school community as a whole, academically, spiritually, and socially!
How will students in this program interact with their peers throughout SJJ?
Gonzaga Scholars will interact with their Titan brothers organically and authentically through academics and classroom connections, through faith during retreats, Mass and Christian service events, through athletics and extracurriculars in plays, musicals, and both on the field and sidelines, and socially through the halls, pep-rallies and dances. Additionally, there is a program of upperclassman dedicated to being a friendly face and guide to our Gonzaga Scholars where students serve as trusted peers, companions, and guides throughout their high school experience. Guides meet each Scholar where they are, building friendship, belonging, and connection within the Titan brotherhood.
Are there tuition assistance opportunities for students in the Gonzaga Scholars Program?
Yes. All St. John’s Jesuit families, including students in the Gonzaga Scholars Program, can apply for financial aid and tuition assistance. In addition to internal financial aid, there are also independent organizations and state-funded scholarships, such as the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship, that may be used toward tuition assistance pursuant to scholarship guidelines.
What happens after high school for Gonzaga Scholars?
Each Gonzaga Scholar’s path is shaped in close partnership with his family. The Gonzaga Scholars Program Director will work with each family to identify the next step to best meet their son’s individual path. Some students may opt for a certificate of completion where other students may choose a pathway that ends with a diploma. This individualized approach helps families plan next steps, whether that is continued education, vocational training or community involvement.
